The incident took around 7 a.m., Monday, April 26, in New Haven County when the two people ran up to the Derby officer's police cruiser as he was sitting at a traffic light, said State Police Trooper Joe Dorelus.

The officer got out of his vehicle to see what was wrong when one of the people who approached the vehicle pulled out a gun and fired shots at a passing vehicle, Dorelus said.

The Derby officer then returned fire and shot the man in the leg, he added.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Doreulus said investigators from the Western District Major Crime Squad arrived on the scene but did not have information on why the man began shooting at the vehicle.

The vehicle that was shot at drove away.

The Danbury State Attorney is handling the use of force aspect of the case and the Milford State Attorney is handling the criminal aspect, Doreulus said.

The name of the police officer and the suspect have not been provided.
